Valletta the Capital of Malta
Valletta is the capital of the Republic of Malta. It is known by the Maltese Il Belt, “the city”, while the name Valletta is traditionally referred to the inner citadel fortified oldest, founded in 1566 by Jean Parisot de la Valette, a french nobleman who was Grand Master of the Order of Knights Hospitaller at that time, and he had saved the island from Ottoman invasion. The original name was Humilissima Civitas Valletta, but instead was soon dubbed as the Superbissima for his ostentation of the rich Baroque palaces, churches and gardens, primarily designed by the architect Francesco Laparelli, which changed the appearance of the medieval city. The city’s history has always been closely linked to that of the island, if the architecture has experienced a period of deadlock after the departure of the Knights of Malta, the advent of the British led to a new urban renaissance that saw the design of doors, housing and civil construction.
